Wet Sounds vs. Rockford Fosgate

Preface

Before reading our Wet Sounds vs. Rockford Fosgate breakdown, there is one very important point we want to make. Stay true to yourself. If you have had multiple boats with Wet Sounds stereo systems, or if your best friend has a Wet Sounds stereo and you absolutely love it, you should probably go with Wet Sounds. If you had Rockford amps and subwoofers in your car back in the today, or even today, and you identify as a "Rockford Guy," you should probably go with Rockford. If you are loyal to a certain brand, stay loyal. If you don't, you will probably regret it. If you are a Rockford guy and you go with Wet Sounds, you will inevitably be out on the water, hear some guy come by with a Rockford system in his boat, and second guess yourself. Conversely, if you love Wet Sounds and you go with Rockford, when you hear that Wet Sounds system in the other guys boat, you will have that feeling and say to yourself, "Damn, I should have just stayed true and gone with the Wet Sounds system." Don't make this harder than it needs to be. If you aren't loyal to Wet Sounds or Rockford, read this article. We will help you make a decision.

Overview
Wet Sounds and Rockford both make amazing marine audio products that are designed to play loud and clear over any and all engine, wind, or water noise.. Wet Sounds only focuses on marine grade audio components while Rockford Fosgate is one of the pioneers in car audio and the 12-volt industry as a whole. We will break down Wet Sounds and Rockford Fosgate marine products so that you can easily compare and determine the best products for your boat or UTV.

Coaxial Speakers
Wet Sounds REVO
The Wet Sounds REVO speakers come in 6.5", 8" and 10" diameters. The REVO speakers come with titanium dome tweeters. The 6.5" and the 8" come with a 1" tweeter and the 10" come with a 1.25" tweeter. The power handling on the REVO speakers is on the higher end of the market for each speaker size. 100W RMS for a 6.5" and 150W RMS for the 8" is higher than most other marine speakers.
Wet Sounds RECON
The RECON speakers from Wet Sounds are designed for lower power applications when compared to REVO. The RECON speakers will work off of deck power while the REVO will not. The RECON speakers have aluminum dome tweeters instead of the titanium that come on the REVO. However, the price point for the RECON is lower than REVO and more comparable to the price point of the Rockford M1.
Rockford Fosgate M0 Speakers

The Rockford Fosgate M0 speakers are their entry level, price point based marine speakers. The Rockford Fosgate M0 speakers sound good and better than most around their price point. The M0 are the speakers we recommend if you want good sounding speakers to play directly off of your radio, without an amplifier. Like any speakers, the M0's will sound better with an amplifier, but if you have an amplifier, we recommend stepping up to the M1.

Rockford Fosgate M1 Speakers

The Rockford Fosgate M1 speakers are one of our favorites in that mid-tier of marine speakers. These are the speakers that are better than most, but more affordable than the "Premium" priced speakers. The Rockford Fosgate M1 speakers come standard with their Color Optix RGB LED lighting and they have a 1" PEI dome tweeter. The PEI dome tweeter gives you the volume and clarity you expect from a hard dome tweeter without the harshness that some don't like from an aluminum dome. The M1 speakers come in both black and white sport grille options. If you like your music loud, the Rockford Fosgate M1 speakers offer unbeatable performance at a affordable price point. These marine speakers are a tremendous value.

Rockford Fosgate M2 Speakers

The Rockford Fosgate M2 speakers are not only loud, but they are clean, and they are clear. They Rockford Fosgate M2 speakers come in both 6.5" and 8" models and are available in gloss white or gloss black and include stainless steel, mesh grilles for that unique, aggressive Rockford appearance. The Rockfod M2 marine speakers come standard with Rockford's Color Optix RGB LED lighting system for easy, hassle free connections for both the speaker wire and the LED lights. The 6.5" and 8" M2 speakers can handle more power than most marine speakers of the same size and they come with 1" PXNX tweeters that delliver maximum efficiency, volume, and clarity. Rockford isn't forthcoming with information about "PXNX" but it is 3dB louder than the previous version, and it delivers superior sound quality. I asked their product development manager about the material and he described it as, "Stuff, that isn't really a hard dome tweeter, but it isn't a silk-dome tweeter either." Whe comparing power handling, efficiency, and the ease of the Color Optix power and lighting system, the Rockford Fosgate M2 speakers are among the very best marine speakers in the world.

When comparing the M2-65 to the REVO 6, the Rockford Fosgate speakers handle more power and they are more efficient. The tweeters are the same size. The REVO 6 have a titanium dome tweeter and Rockford uses their proprietary PXNX. If you want the XS grilles with the stainless overlays, the Rockford speakers cost less than the REVO 6. If you don't care about the the stainless overlays on the Wet Sounds speakers, the Rockford speakers are a little bit more expensive, but on paper at least, you are getting a better speaker.

When comparing the M1-65 to the RECON 6, the M1 has a larger tweeter, can handle more power, and is 1 dB more efficient. In addition, the M1 speakers come with RGB LEDs standard. The price difference is negligable, between the Rockford M1-65 with and LEDs and the RECON 6 without LEDs. If you compare the M1-65 to the RECON 6 models with LEDs, the Rockford speakers cost less money. We have to give the nod to the M1-65 over the RECON 6.

8" Speaker Comparison
Wet Sounds REVO 8 8"

• 150W RMS Power Handling
• 35Hz to 21kHz Frequency Response
• Sensitivity: 92dB @ 1W/1M
• Color Optix RGB LEDs Included
• Black or White Sport Grilles

When comparing the REVO 8 to the M2-8, both speakers have the same size tweeter. We have the same situation with the 8" that we did with the 6.5". The Wet Sounds has a titanium dome tweeter and the Rockford has their PXNX tweeter. From a power handling perspective, the Rockford M2 handles more power than the REVO 8 and it is more efficient. Both speakers come with RGB LEDs integrated into the speaker grille. The Rockfor M2-8 has the Color Optix technology for easy, plug-and-play, wiring for both the speakers and the LED lights. The M2-8's come with both the standard sport grilles and the stainless steel mesh grilles while the Wet Sounds force you to select your grille choice at the time of purchase. The M2-8 speakers cost less than the Wet Sounds REVO 8. We give the advantage here to the Rockford Fosgate M2-8.

When comparing the M1-8 to the Wet Sounds RECON 8, the M1-8 wins running away. The M1-8 speakers are significantly more affordable, they handle more power, they have the same size tweeter, the M1-8 is significantly more efficient, and both come standard with RGB LEDs. If you are comparing the mid-tier 8" speakers between Rockford and Wet Sounds, the Rockford Fosgate M1 speakers are just better.

Tower Speakers
Both Rockford Fosgate and Wet Sounds make some of the best tower speakers you can put on your boat and both make coaxial and horn tweeter models. The Wet Sounds REV tower speakers are their horn tweeter version and they come in an 8" and a 10" model. Rockford Fosgate's horn tweeter tower speakers are only available in an 8" model. However, we will compare the Rockford 8" to both the Wet Sounds REV 10 and REV 8. Wet Sounds does make a dual horn tweeter tower speakers in the REV 410. We will include the information here but Rockford does not have a competing product for that.
Horn Tweeter Speaker Comparison

The Wet Sounds REV tower speakers were the first horn tweeter tower speakers that you could put on your boat. Wet Sounds offers these in both gloss black and gloss white finishes and they also have clamsp and adapters to fit on virtually any tower or metal tube. The REV tower speakers come in fixed clamps, swivel clamps, surface mount (X Mount), or swivel surface mount hardware. Wet Sounds also has the adapters so that you can bolt REV 8 or REV 10 tower speakers to your factory tower for an OEM style appearance.

The Rockford Fosgate horn tweeter tower speakers are only available in an 8" model. Like Wet Sounds, Rockford Fosgate offers them in both gloss white and gloss black. The Rockford horn tweeter tower speakers are direct mount compatible with the Malibu tower. The die-cast clamps are not included but will fit bars ranging from 1.5"-2.75" in diameter. When used with the clamps, these cans can swivel up to 359 degrees to offer maximum mounting flexibility and allow you to aim the speakers exactly where you want them.

Wet Sounds REV 10

• RGB LEDs: No
• Sold as Pair
Wet Sounds REV 8
• 8"
• RMS Power Handling: 300W
• Peak Power Handling: 600W
• Coaxial Horn Tweeter
• Frequency Response: 20Hz - 20kHz
•Sensitivity: 92dB @ 1W/1M
• RGB LEDs: No
• Sold as Pair
Rockford Fosgate PM282HW
• 8"
• RMS Power Handling: 150W
• Peak Power Handling: 300W
• Coaxial Horn Tweeter
• Frequency Response: 63Hz - 22kHz
•Sensitivity: 93dB @ 1W/1M
• RGB LEDs: No
• Sold as Pair

When comparing horn tweeter tower speakers, Rockford does not have a 10" model. If you want tower speakers and you feel like 8's are just too small, go with the Wet Sounds REV 10's. When comparing the REV 8's to the Rockford PM282W-H tower speakers, they are similar in some ways but also very different. The Wet Sounds REV 8 speakers can handle 300 watts of RMS power. The Rockford 8" horn tower speakers are only rated to 150 watts RMS. Now that isn't to say that they aren't loud, that is just to point out the power differences. Many folks don't make or own amplifiers that are going to put out 300 watts RMS per channel. If you don't have the amplifier to power the REV 8's, the Rockford tower speakers are going to be a better choice. At the same time, there is no substitute for power. If I put 300 watts to one speaker and 150 watts to the other, all things being equal, the speaker getting 300 watts of power will blow away the speakers getting 150 watts of power. The REV 8's and the PM282W-H speakers are roughly the same price. If you have an amp that puts out 300 watts per channel, or if you are willing to spend the money for the $1000 amp that puts out 300 watts per channel, go with the REV 8's. If you have 100-200 watts per channel from your amplifier, the Rockford 8" horn tweeters are the way to go because they are more efficient and your power output from the amp will match the power output of the speakers much better.

8" Coaxial Tower Speaker Comparison
Wet Sounds ICON
• 8"
• RMS Power Handling: 150W
• Peak Power Handling: 300W
• 1" Titanium Tweeter

•Sensitivity: 92dB @ 1W/1M
• RGB LEDs: No
• Depth: 11.5" (292.10mm)
• Fixed Clamp, Swivel Clamp, or Surface Mount Hardware
• Sold as Pair
Rockford Fosgate PM282W
• 8"
• RMS Power Handling: 100W
• Peak Power Handling: 200W
• 1" Alloy Tweeter
• Polypropylene Cone w/ Santoprene Surround
• Frequency Response: 40Hz - 20kHz
•Sensitivity: 90dB @ 1W/1M
• RGB LEDs: No
• Depth: 14.2" (286mm)
• C Clamp Hardware Sold Separately
• Sold as Pair

If we are comparing coaxial speakers tower speakers to coaxial tower speakers, the Wet Sounds ICON 8" tower speakers outperform the Rockford Fosgate PM282W tower speakers. The ICON handle more power, and they are more efficient. they have a titanium dome tweeter, and they aren't as deep as the Rockford towers. However, the ICON speakers are, at least at the time this is written, $200 more expensive than the Rockford model. In an apples to apples comparison of the Rockford PM282W and the ICON 8 with the X mount hardware, you are getting what you are paying for. The Wet Sounds ICON towers outperform the Rockford towers, but they cost more money. It makes sense.

Now, if you need swivel clamps, you can get the Rockford 8" horn tweeters and clamps for roughly the same price as the ICON tower speakers with the swivel clamps. That is not an apples to apples comparison and the Rockford 8" horn tweeter tower speakers are going to blow away the ICON 8 because the the PM282W-H has a horn tweeter and the ICON 8's do not.

6.5" Coaxial Tower Speaker Comparison
Wet Sounds RECON
• 6.5"
• RMS Power Handling: 60W
• Peak Power Handling: 120W

• Frequency Response: 40Hz - 20kHz
•Sensitivity: 89dB @ 1W/1M
• RGB LEDs: No
• Depth: 8.5" (292.10mm)
• Swivel Clamp w/ Slider Base Included
• Sold as Pair
Rockford Fosgate PM652MW
• 6.5"

• Injection Molded, Mineral Filled Polypropylene Cone w/ TPE (Thermo Plastic Elastomer) Surround
• Frequency Response: 49Hz - 20kHz
•Sensitivity: 89dB @ 1W/1M
• RGB LEDs: No
• Depth: 7.1" (181mm)
• C Clamps Sold Separately
• Sold as Pair
Rockford Fosgate RM1652W-MB
• 6.5"
• RMS Power Handling: 75W
• Peak Power Handling: 150W
• 1.0" LCP Tweeter
• Injection Molded, Mineral Filled Polypropylene Cone w/ TPE (Thermo Plastic Elastomer) Surround
• Frequency Response: 49Hz - 20kHz
•Sensitivity: 89dB @ 1W/1M
• RGB LEDs: No
• Depth: 7.1" (181mm)
• C Clamps Sold Separately
• Sold as Pair

For the 6.5" coaxial tower speakers, the RECON offer a better value than the Rockford RM1652W. From a speaker performance standpoint, they are very similar. The Rockford towers have a larger tweeter, but 60W vs 75 is not noticable on the water. The sensitivity of both speakers are rated the same at 89 dB @ 1W/1M. The big difference here is the fact that the RECON 6.5" pods come with clamps and cost less than the Rockford tower speakers pods without clamps. When you add the price of the clamps to the Rockford speakers, the Wet Sounds RECON 6.5" tower speakers provide virtually the same performance on paper but they cost a good deal less.

Amplifiers

Comparing Wet Sounds amplifiers to virtually any other brand by product series is not a good apples to apples comparison in our opinion. For the most part, the Wet Sounds amplifiers put out significantly more power than most Rockford Fosgate amplifiers. However, the price point on the Rockford Fosgate amplifiers is significantly more affordable than the Wet Sounds amplifiers. Instead of comparing series to series, let's break it down by the number of channels. The power output and price points within each category vary drastically. It is more about finding the right amount of power for your speakers, then comparing features and price points to see which amp is better. A simple recommendation is this. If you have Wet Sounds speakers, go with Wet Sounds amplifiers. If you have Rockford Fosgate speakers, go with Rockford Fosgate amplifiers. There are some exceptions to this rule though. If you can get the power output you need for significant less money by changing brands, it might make sense to go with a different brand amplifier. However, remember that all brands and all amplifiers are not the same. If you stick with Rockford Fosgate, Wet Sounds, JL Audio, Kicker, etc. you will get what you pay for. If you see an 3000 watt amplifier for $400, it probably isn't a 3000 watt amplifier. That should be your signal to stay away from that brand.

Wet Sounds Sinister
The Sinister amplifiers from Wet Sounds are their top of the line amplifiers and feature their MAXED Class-D power supply which is super-efficient. You get tons of power output with very low power consumption, relative to the output.
Wet Sounds SYN-DX
The Wet Sounds SYN-DX or Syndicate-DX amplifiers have more power output than most other marine amplifiers, but they don't have the MAXED power supply to equal the output of the Sinister amplifiers.
Wet Sounds HTX
The HTX amplifiers also have Class-D power supplies, but the HTX does not put out as much power as the SYN-DX. The HTX amplifiers are more affordable than the SYN-DX and are perfect if you want the performance of Wet Sounds, but you don't need the raw output of SYN-DX or Sinister.
Wet Sounds STX-MICRO
The Wet Sounds STX MICRO amplifiers are application-specific amplifiers for situations where space is an issue. These amplifiers were originally designed for the UTV and powersports market, but they are true, marine-grade amplifiers and work in boats too.

Prime Marine

The Rockford Prime Marine amplifiers are their entry level marine offering and these amps put out the raw power you expect from a Rockford amp at an affordable price point. Is there anything special about these amplifiers? Not really. For the money, you get a good amount of power at a pretty nice price. One thing you might notice is that you can get a similar Punch Marine amp with more true output, better signal processing, better thermal management and LED clipping indicators for slightly more money. The upgrade is worth it. If you don't care about any of that and you just want raw power, the two in the Prime Marine line that stick out ar the M400-4D and the M1200-1D.

Punch Marine

The Rockford Fosgate Punch Marine amplifiers deliver both raw power output with better thermal management, better signal processing, and more true output than the Prime Marine amps. These Punch Marine amps come in monoblock, 2 channel, 4 channel, and 5 channel configurations. Most configurations also have multiple power output levels within the number of channels. The Punch Marine amps have Rockford's CLEAN setup which allows you to determine the clipping point in your head unit (input clip) and the output clip so that you can maximize your gain settings and volume without distortion. This helps prevent you from blowing your speakers due to clipping and/or distortion. It doesn't mean it isn't impossible to blow your speakers, you still can with too much power, but it helps. Since the Punch Marine amps are full size amplifiers, they have better thermal management than the Power Mini. If you take your boat out on really hot days and you like the blast your music ALL DAY LONG, the Punch Marine are probably the most robust amplifiers among Rockford's marine amp lineup.

Power Mini Marine

The Rockford Fosgate Power Mini Marine amplifiers might offer the most value among any marine amplifier available. These amplifiers have amazing output with the 2 channel, TM400x2ad and 4 channel TM400x4ad, amps putting out 200 watts and 100 watts per channel RMS, respectively. The TM750x1bd will provide plenty of power for multiple subwoofers and 1-ohm stable. The TM1000x5ad gives 100 watts per channel RMS and up to 600 watts for a subwoofer in a super small compact footprint. When it comes to output per square inch, there is nothing close to these amplifiers.

One thing that makes the Rockford Power Mini amplifiers unique is the constant power circuit. The TM400x2ad, TM400x4ad, and TM1000x5ad all have the constant power circuit that manages the power supply to ensure that you get 100 watts per channel to your speakers across all impedances. If you are running 4 speakers off of 2 channels to a 2 ohm load, this might not be idea, but in most situations where you wire your speakers to a 4 ohm load, this provides a power, volume, and clarity difference that you can hear. When the speaker cone moves, the impedance changes. So as you are playing music the load the amplifier sees is never the same, sometimes it is 2 ohms, sometimes it is 10 ohms. With the Punch Marine, Prime Marine, and any other amplifier (outside of the JL MHD), you are getting less power at 8, 10, or 16 ohms. With the Rockford Power Mini amps, you are getting that 100 watts RMS ALL THE TIME. Another way to look at it is this. Most amplifiers are rated at their 2 ohm output. A 400 watt, 4 channel punch marine amplifier puts out 50 watts per channel RMS at 4 ohms. It puts out 100 watts per channel, or double the power at 2 ohms. If we take that same mentality to the Power Mini amps, the TM400x2ad and the TM400x4ad are more like 800 watt amplifiers than 400 watt amplifiers. The TM1000x5ad, is more like a 1400 watt, 5 channel marine amp than a 1000 watt 5 channel. When you see the difference the constant power circuit makes, you get a sense of what makes these amplifiers unique.

One thing that is important to keep in mind. The Rockford Fosgate Power Mini Amplifiers are small and they do get warm. If you take your boat out on 100+ degree days and you hammer on your stereo all day long, the Punch Marine might be a better fit because they are full sized amplifiers and they have more surface area and mass to dissipate heat.

Subwoofers
Unless you are a total bass head and you want absolutely crazy bass on your boat, if you want to add subwoofers you should match the speakers that you want. The speakers and amplifiers are going to be the core of your boat's stereo system. If you have Wet Sounds speakers, you should get Wet Sounds subwoofers. If you have Rockford Fosgate speakers, you should get Rockford Fosgate subwoofers. If you are a true bass head and you want insane bass out on your boat, the Wet Sounds REVO XXX subwoofers are SPL style competition woofers that can handle over 1000 watts RMS, and designed for a marine environment.
Wet Sounds make marine subwoofers for both free-air and enclosed applications. The Wet Sounds REVO subwoofers come in 8", 10", and 12" models and they are available in both black and white. All of the sizes and colors are offered in single 2 ohm or 4 ohm configurations.

In addition to selling individual marine subwoofers, Wet Sounds also makes loaded marine subwoofer enclosures. They have two different versions with the Stealth and the REVO-12-PSE. The Stealth-AS subwoofer enclosures are powered and have an amplifier built-in to the enclosure itself. The REVO 12-PSE does not have an amplifier built-in but it a very nice enclosure that includes foot clamps so that the enclosure can be easily removed if needed. The Stealth-AS subwoofers come in 6", 8", and 10" models and the REVO 12-PSE, as you probably guessed, come in a 12" only.

Wet Sounds Free Air Subwoofers
Wet Sounds offers free air or infinite baffle subwoofers in both the REVO and RECON series. Like the speakers, the REVO handle more power and have better or more overall output. The REVO subwoofers are available in either white or gray cones and they are also offered in both single 2 and 4-ohm voice coils. The REVO subwoofers do not come with subwoofer grilles. They must be purchases separately to match your speakers. The RECON subwoofers come with speaker grilles and are available in the white SW, silver XS, and black XS grilles to match the RECON speakers. The RECON subwoofers can handle less power, but they are more affordable. With the Wet Sounds free air subwoofers, you get what you pay for.
Wet Sounds Subwoofers for Enclosures
In addition to the REVO and RECON free-air subwoofers, Wet Sounds also makes the REVO XXX subwoofers. These are massive SPL subwoofers that are designed for bass heads that want serious output that will withstand the elements. Bass is tough in a boat because you don't get the cabin boost that you get in a car. However, if you really want bass on your boat, the REVO XXX subwoofers are the way to go. The REVO XXX comes in both 12" and 15" sizes. The 12" REVO XXX handles 1200 Watts RMS and the 15" handles an absurd 2000 watts RMS.
Wet Sounds Marine Loaded Enclosures
Wet Sounds offers two different styles of marine-grade, loaded enclosures. The Stealth-AS subwoofers have a built-in amplifier and come in a 6", 8" and 10" model. These subwoofers were originally designed for the powersports market but also work well in boats. The other loaded enclosure Wet Sounds makes is the REVO 12 PSE which features a 12" REVO subwoofer and a passive radiator. The REVO 12 PSE comes with your choice of subwoofer grilles (1 for the subwoofer, 1 for the passive radiator) and gives you the bass you expect from a subwoofer without having to cut a hole in the hull. The REVO 12 PSE has quick-release mounts so that you can clamp it down, and then take it out if you want. The passive radiator is essentially a subwoofer without any driver powering it. It gives you the performance of a ported enclosure without the port and without the port noise. Everything is sealed and waterproof with the REVO 12 PSE and it is a quick, minimally invasive, "Give me some bass" solution for your boat.

Rockford Fosgate M1 Subwoofers

Rockford Fosgate M1 subwoofers come in 8", 10", and 12" sizes. To match all of their speakers, the M1 subwoofers come in both black and white and have the dual, six-spoke style sport grilles included. The Rockford M1 subwoofers come with their Color Optix RGB LED system and their Versaswitch selectable impedance feature. The Color Optix feature allows you to easily connect both speaker wire power and the RGB LED connections with easy, plug-n-play connectors. Rockford's Versaswitch technology allows you to easily change the impedance of your DVC subwoofer without having to do anything to the wiring. If it is a dual 4 ohm voice coil, you can select between a 2 ohm or 8 ohms. If it is a dual 2 ohm voice coil, you can select between 1 ohm and 4 ohms. This keeps the wiring straightforward. Connect positive to positive and negative to negative. Choose the right impedance for your application and you are good to go.

The 10" and 12" M1 subwoofers handle 300 watts of RMS power while the 8" handles 150 watts. The M1's can work in both free-air or sealed enclosure applications for maximum mounting flexibility. In most boats, the subwoofers are used in free-air applications for easier installation and you don't have to worry about building an enclosure for the proper air space. If you want to build an enclosure, you still can. The 300 watt RMS power handling matches up well for most marine subwoofer amplifiers.

Rockford Fosgate M2 Subwoofers

The Rockford Fosgate M2 marine subwoofers come in 10" models only and are designed for free-air or infinite baffle applications. The M2 subwoofers handle 400 watts of RMS power and like the M1 subwoofers, the M2 come with Rockford's Color Optix RGB LEDs and the Versaswitch impedance technology. The Color Optix allow you to use Amphenol and Deutsche connector for simple plug and play power for both the speaker connection and the LEDs. The Versaswitch technology allows you to easily select the wired impedance on the subwoofer without having to change the wiring or understand the difference between series and parallel. If you have a 4 ohm DVC subwoofer, you can select either a 2 ohm or 8 ohm load. If you have a 2 ohm DVC subwoofer, you can select either a 1 ohm or 4 ohm load. This make it easy for installation, especially when you have multiple woofers.

From an appearance standpoint, the M2 subwoofers come in both black and white to match the M2 speakers. Like the M2 speakers, these subwoofers also include the stainless steel mesh grilles that are unique to Rockford and they are so, so proud of them. You can choose to use the dual 6-spoke sport grilles or use the grilles with the stainless mesh.

Source Units

When it comes to marine source units, both Wet Sounds and Rockford Fosgate make square-style, digital media receivers as well as "Black Box" style head units where you have a display that is separate from the "Brain."

The Rockford Fosgate PMX-2 was the first marine grade digital media receiver with the square style, compact footprint and a full color display. Every other marine audio company saw the success of the PMX-2 and has basically made a "Me Too" version of it. The Rockford PMX-2 is the original. They then offered the PMX-3 which is a PMX-2 but with a video input and it is SiriusXM ready. Wet Sounds makes the WS-MC-2 which is essentially a PMX-2 that looks a little different and it says Wet Sounds instead of Rockford Fosgate.

Black Box Sytle Head Units

The Wet Sounds WS-MC-1 is a black box source unit with 4 zones of output as well as a 4 channel built-in amplifier at 25W x 4. The WS-MC-1 has AM/FM/WB, Bluetooth, USB, iPhone connectivity, Pandora control, auxiliary, and is Sirius XM ready. This head unit has virtually anything and everything you could ever want out of a marine-grade head unit. The display features a 5" color LCD display with both day and night mode. This unit allows you to set the levels for your zones, and then control them with the master volume knob, or you can adjust them independently if you choose. You can easily add the MC-TR transom remotes to control the stereo when you are not at the helm.

The Rockford Black Box marine head unit is sold as two separate pieces, the PMX8 and the PMX8DH. The PMX8 is one of, if not the most feature rich marine head units available. It has up to 4 zone output and control and each zone has 4 channel pre-outs, it's own EQ settings, and it's own selectable crossover points. The Rockford Fosgate PM8 has all of the standard features you would expect from a modern radio. It has AM/FM, Bluetooth, auxiliary, USB, it is SiriusXM ready, it has Pandora control, and it has an input for a back up camera. The PMX8 is NMEA2K certified to work with select multi-function displays. If you have a NMEA2K display, you don't need to purchase the Rockford one. If you do need a display, it has a 5" full color TFT display with a rotoary volume knob, and front subwoofer control. The faceplate has a epoxy layer between the display and glass to ensure that there is no air gap where dust or moisture might seep in and ruin clarity. The display has a sealed, rotary volume control knob and it is IPX6 rated. As long as your boat doesn't sink, the display will be fine.

Marine Audio Accessories

Both Wet Sounds and Rockford Fosgate make audio accessories, specifically for the marine market. Wet Sounds has a larger offering of what most would consider "Traditional" audio accessories. Wet Sounds has amp kits with equal length power and ground wire. Wet Sounds has marine specific RCA cables. Wet Sounds offers RGB LED rings and their RF link is one of the cooler accessories for any boat.

Rockford has their Color Optix RGB LED system which is extremely cool and easy to use. You don't have to deal with RGB speaker wire, or cutting, or splicing, or anything. Measure your length, buy the cable. Plug one end into the Color Optix RGB controller and the other end into the speaker and you are done. You control the whole thing via an app on your cell phone. It's badass. Rockford also makes a Bluetooth remote control that can attach to your steering wheel for steering wheel control, but without the headache.

    Conclusion

When it comes to marine audio, Wet Sounds and Rockford Fosgate both make very loud, very crisp, very clear sounding products. Wet Sounds has the name and is established in the marine market. Rockford Fosgate is delivering on both performance and value. When you compare the cabin coaxial speakers, the Rockford Fosgate speakers handle more power, they are more efficient, and they cost less. When looking at wake tower speakers, the REV horn tweeter tower speakers outperform the Rockford Fosgate horn tweeter towers. However, the REV 8 and REV 10 are significantly more expensive. The same is true when it comes to the 8" coaxial tower speakers. The ICON tower speakers outperform the PM828, but you can get Rockford horn's for the same price. When it comes to the 6.5" coaxial tower speakers, the Rockford outperform the RECON, but the RECON are significantly less expensive and they include the clamps.

When comparing Rockford Fosgate and Wet Sounds amplifiers, Rockford's amplifiers hold their own when comparing apples to apples. The Rockford Fosgate power mini amplifiers give you similar performance as some of the SYN-DX amplifiers at a much cheaper price point. However, the Wet Sounds amplifiers are full size, Class D amps that will offer better thermal management than the Power Mini marine amps. If you want tons of high power, marine grade output, Wet Sounds is the leader among all marine amplifier manufacturers. Nobody makes amplifiers for the marine environment with that type of output. However, the Wet Sounds amplifiers are significantly more expensive than the Rockford amplifiers. If you compare Power Mini or Punch to the HTX series, Rockford is a better value, virtually across the board.

When looking at subwoofers, if you are big bass head, Wet Sounds makes bigger, badder marine subwoofers. If you aren't a crazy bass head looking to put 1000 watts to each subwoofer, both companies make affordable subwoofers that get the job done. Just match your speakers, put the biggest subwoofers you can fit, and we can move on.

When it comes to head units, Rockford offers more features than Wet Sounds does and they were the first one to market with the small, square style digital media receiver with the PMX-2. We are giving the nod to the original. But, if you have a full Wet Sounds system, get the Wet Sounds head unit. If you have a full Rockford system, get the Rockford head unit. Don't make it more difficult than it needs to be. It will look better when everything is the same brand.

If we are looking at the appearance, Wet Sounds offers the most options when it comes to grille choices. They have 8 different grille choices and something for everyone. Rockford sticks to a standard, dual six spoke design on all of their speakers except for the M2. The M2 speakers and subwoofers come with both the sport grilles and the stainless steel mesh grilles. We can't decide which one you think will look better and it really doesn't matter what we think because it isn't our boat!
