Wet Sounds vs. Fusion Marine

Before You Read

Before reading our Wet Sounds vs. Fusion speaker breakdown, there is one very important point we want to make. Stay true to yourself. If you have had multiple boats with Wet Sounds stereo systems, or if your best friend has a Wet Sounds stereo and you absolutely love it, you should probably go with Wet Sounds. If you had Fusion in other boats or if you are super loyal to Garmin, you should probably go with Fusion. If you are loyal to a certain brand, stay loyal. If you don't, you will probably regret it. If you are a Fusion guy and you go with Wet Sounds, you will inevitably be out on the water, hear some guy come by with a Fusion system in his boat, and second guess yourself. Conversely, if you love Fusion and you go with Wet Sounds, when you hear that Fusion system in the other guys boat, you will have that feeling and say to yourself, "Damn, I should have just stayed true and gone with the Fusion system." Don't make this harder than it needs to be. If you aren't loyal to Wet Sounds or Rockford, read this article. We will help you make a decision.

Both Fusion and Wet Sounds strictly make audio products for boats and the marine environment. Fusion is a Garmin company and Garmin has its roots in marine electronics. Wet Sounds got started in marine audio and has stayed in it. Wet Sounds does do alot in powersports with UTVs, but that is also wet, harsh environment. Both companies make fantastic products. Wet Sounds is probably best known for their speakers and making products that are extremely loud and clear. Fusion is most known for their high quality head units although they also offer a full line of quality amps, speakers, and subwoofers.

Coaxial Speakers
Wet Sounds REVO
The Wet Sounds REVO speakers come in 6.5", 8" and 10" diameters. The REVO speakers come with titanium dome tweeters. The 6.5" and the 8" come with a 1" tweeter and the 10" come with a 1.25" tweeter. The power handling on the REVO speakers is on the higher end of the market for each speaker size. 100W RMS for a 6.5" and 150W RMS for the 8" is higher than most other marine speakers.
Wet Sounds RECON
The RECON speakers from Wet Sounds are designed for lower power applications when compared to REVO. The RECON speakers will work off of deck power while the REVO will not. The RECON speakers have aluminum dome tweeters instead of the titanium that come on the REVO. However, the price point for the RECON is lower than REVO and more comparable to the price point of the Rockford M1.
Fusion EL Series Speakers

The Fusion EL series or Economy Line speakers are offered as a price point produt that delivers a shallow mount, marine-grade speaker at an affordable price point. These speakers can fit in virtually any application due to the minimal mounting depth, and the sport grilles come with RGB LEDs, but for the most part these are cheap speakers both in terms of the price point on performance. These speakers are not even close to comparable to the RECON. If you are debating between the EL and the RECON, the RECON are the better product, the EL are cheaper.

Fusion FR Series Speakers

The Fusion FR series speakers provide a decent value among mid-tier marine speakers. The Fusion FR series speakers are priced below most other speakers with similar features. These speakers can handle decent power, come with titanium dome tweeters, and a pretty efficient given their size. The FR series speakers come in a 6" and a 7" with the 6" fitting most 6.5" cutouts.

Fusion XS Series Speakers

The Fusion XS series speakers are the "go-to" in Fusion's marine speaker line for the mid-tier speakers. The XS speakers have aluminum dome tweeters for crisp, clear, bright output and will get loud. The XS speakers are among the more efficient marine speakers, especially wiht their price point. The Fusion XS are similar to the Wet Sounds RECON speakers and for this comparison, we will mostly focus on RECON vs. XS

Fusion FM Speakers

The Fusion Flush Mount speakers are designed to fit into the the hull of your boat with minimal portrusion. These speakers install like in-celing home theater speakers and "clamp" to the hull of your boat once the speaker is installed. The FM series speakers are application specific and for boat owners that want sound and want clean aesthetics where one might hardly notice a speaker is even there. Wet Sounds does not make a comparable product to the Fusion FM series speakers. If you want flat-mount speakers and you love the way these look, you should get them.

Fusion Signature Series Speakers

The Fusion Signature series speakers are Fusion's top of the line marine speakers. These speakers come with silk dome tweeters for smooth, rich, balanced output that is focus on sound quality, the sound stage, and fidelity. The Fusion signature series speakers are premium products and sold at a premium price. These speakers are going to similar in price and performance to the Wet Sounds REVO and this comparison, we will focus on how the Signature Series from Fusion matches up again the Wet Sounds REVO.

6.5" Speaker Comparison
Wet Sounds REVO 6 6.5"

• RGB LEDs Standard on Sport Grilles
• Classic or Sport Grilles Available (Both Include Black & White Grilles)

When comparing the REVO 6 to the Fusion Signature Series, the REVO 6 handle more power. The efficiency ratings are equal. The REVO 6 come with RGB LEDs and the Fusion Signature series speakers come with blue or white LEDs. Wet Sounds uses a titanium dome tweeter and the Fusion Signature series use a silk dome tweeter. The difference in tweeter material is going to be the difference maker. The silk dome tweeter is going to give you rich, smooth, warm output. The titanium tweeter in the Wet Sounds REVO 6 is going to give you bright, loud, clear, in-your-face type of output. Both speakers will get loud, the REVO 6 will play louder than the Fusion Signature. In a marine environemnt, if you are going at any speed, the fidelity and staging gets lost with engine, wind, and water noise. If you volume and clarity is most important to you, go with the Wet Sounds REVO 6. If you want fidelity, staging, and you are more of a slow cruise with a glass of wine type person, go with Fusion.

Comparing the Fusion XS and the Wet Sounds REVO is a little more apples to apples than the REVO 6 vs. the Signature Series. Both speakers have an aluminum dome tweeter for bright, clear output that will cut through ambient noise. The RECON can handle 10 more watts than the Fusion XS series, but that is undetecable in a real world environments. The Fusion XS series speakers are more efficient than the Wet Sounds RECON and they are less expensive overall when comparing price point and whether or not the speakers have RGB LEDs. If you want sport grilles, the Wet Sounds RECON looks much better in our opinion, but if you like the more subdued, classic appearance, the Fusion XS classic grilles have a timeless marine appearance and you get both black and white color grilles with the speakers.

8" Speaker Comparison
Wet Sounds REVO 8 8"
• 1" Titanium Dome Tweeter
• 150W RMS Power Handling
• 35Hz to 22kHz Frequency Response
• Sensitivity: 92dB @ 1W/1M
• RGB LEDs Included
• 1 Grille Color/Style Included
Fusion Signature 8"
• Silk Dome Tweeter
• 100W RMS Power Handling
• 60Hz to 22kHz Frequency Response
• Sensitivity: 91dB @ 1W/1M
• Blue or White LED's Included
• 1 Grille Color/Style Included

Wet Sounds RECON 8 8"
• 1" Aluminum Dome Tweeter
• 70W RMS Power Handling
• 45Hz to 20kHz Frequency Response
• Sensitivity: 89dB @ 1W/1M
• RGB LEDs Included
• Silver Sport or White Classic Grilles
Fusion XS Series 7.7"
• Aluminum Dome Tweeter
• 65W RMS Power Handling
• 70Hz to 18kHz Frequency Response
• Sensitivity: 92dB @ 1W/1M
• RGB LEDs Included with Sport Grilles
• Both Black & White Grilles Included

Similar to the 6.5" sitaution, the Wet Sounds REVO 8 and the Fusion Signature Series 7.7" speakers are similar but not. The REVO 8 can handle 50% more power and have a titanium dome tweeter. The Signature Series speakers have silk dome tweeters and will be more musical versus powerful. If you like your music loud, the Wet Sounds is definitely the better speaker. If you aren't so much into volume, but more into the fidelity and staging of your stereo system, the Fusion speakers are probably a better choice because of the silk dome tweeter. The Wet Sounds are slightly more expensive, but they can handle more power and they are going to play louder and brighter. Since a boat is typically a noisy environment, we recommend the Wet Sounds REVO 8.

We like the Fusion XS series speakers better than the Wet Sounds RECON when comparing the mid-tier 8" speakers. The 7.7" XS series speakers are 3dB more efficient, the tweeter materials are the same, and the power handling is virtually equal. Regardless of the grille style, the Fusion XS speakers come with both black and white grilles and the Fusion speakers are significantly cheaper. When comparing these two speakers, the 7.7" Fusion XS are a better value than the 8" Wet Sounds RECON speakers.

10" Speaker Comparison
Wet Sounds REVO CX-10 10"
• 1.25" Titanium Dome Tweeter
• 350W RMS Power Handling
• 35Hz to 22kHz Frequency Response
• Sensitivity: 90dB @ 1W/1M
• RGB LEDs Included
• 1 Grille Color/Style Included

If you want the biggest, baddest, and loudest speakers you can put in your boat, the Wet Sounds REVO CX-10 are the answer. These speakers are massive, can handle a ton of power, and have ridiculous output. There is no substitute for power and the 350 watts of RMS power handling by the speakers is ridiculous. If you have the budget and you can invest in the amplifiers to give these speakers the power that they can handle, you will be rewarded. Wet Sounds is known for being bright, clear, and loud. These speakers deliver across all three aspects at levels that are simply unmatched.

Tower Speakers

With marine tower speakers, comparing Wet Sounds and Fusion is a slightly more difficult. Wet Sounds has the deepest offering of marine tower speakers of among all of the manufacturers. Fusion only makes marine tower speakers in their signature line, they only offer them in an 8.8" size, and they are coaxial style tower speakers. Wet Sounds offers 6.5" RECON pods, 8" ICON coaxial tower speakers, 8" REV horn tweeter tower speakers, 10" REV horn tweeter tower speakers, and the REV410 dual 10" tower speakers.

Horn Tweeter Speaker Comparison

The purpose of tower speakers is to broadcoast your music to the person you are towing. You want maximum distance, volume, and clarity without distortion. The best way to do that is with good power and horn loaded compression drivers. Horn tweeter tower speakers are just louder, more clear, and sound better. If you want maximum volume and clarity at distance, go with the Wet Sounds REV tower speakers. Fusion does not offer a product that is going to compete. If you can afford the 10" REV 10s, go with them. If not, go with the 8" REV 8s.

For marine tower speaker applications, the titanium dome tweeter in the ICON 8 is better for broadcasting than the silk dome tweeter in the Fusion Signature Series. If you are using the tower speakers as additional speakers on a larger boat and not so much for broadcasting to someone you are towing, the Fusion Signature will work really well for that. In a traditional tower application, we like the Wet Sounds ICON better. The ICON tower speakers include the mounting hardware and unless you are using swivel clamps, the ICON speakers have a lower total cost because the Signature Series tower speakers from Fusion don't come with clamps.

6.5" Coaxial Tower Speaker Comparison

Fusion does not make any 6.5" tower speaker pods. Typically the 6.5" tower speakers are used in UTVs, Jeeps, and other harsh environments that tend to be more automotive than marine, but there are still plenty of boats that use 6.5" tower speakers. If you are comparing Wet Sounds to Fusion and you want 6.5" tower speakers, the Wet Sounds RECON are the way to go.

Amplifiers

When it comes to amplifiers, Wet Sounds product offering is about as solid as it comes. Wet Sounds offers 3 series of full size marine amplifiers and the STX MICRO amps for applications that are tight on space. All of the Wet Sounds amplifiers use efficient, Class-D circuitry and they feature sealed designs for best-in- class water protection. Wet Sounds amplifiers come in monoblock, 2 channel, 4 channel, and 6 channel configurations. The 6 channel marine amplifiers can be bridged to give you the functionality of a 5 channel amplifier.

Fusion offers two lines of amplifers with the Signature Series and their MA series. The Signature series Fusion amplifiers use Class-D circuitry for efficient power consumption and thermal efficiency. The MA series Fusion amplifiers use class-AB circuitry to deliver plenty of power at affordable price points. Fusion does not offer any compact chassis amplifiers. They are all full-size marine amps.

Wet Sounds Sinister
The Sinister amplifiers from Wet Sounds are their top of the line amplifiers and feature their MAXED Class-D power supply which is super-efficient. You get tons of power output with very low power consumption, relative to the output.
Wet Sounds SYN-DX
The Wet Sounds SYN-DX or Syndicate-DX amplifiers have more power output than most other marine amplifiers, but they don't have the MAXED power supply to equal the output of the Sinister amplifiers.
Wet Sounds HTX
The HTX amplifiers also have Class-D power supplies, but the HTX does not put out as much power as the SYN-DX. The HTX amplifiers are more affordable than the SYN-DX and are perfect if you want the performance of Wet Sounds, but you don't need the raw output of SYN-DX or Sinister.
Wet Sounds STX-MICRO
The Wet Sounds STX MICRO amplifiers are application-specific amplifiers for situations where space is an issue. These amplifiers were originally designed for the UTV and powersports market, but they are true, marine-grade amplifiers and work in boats too.

Fusion MA Amplifiers

The Fusion MA series amplifiers are designed to be price point products. These amps need to be installed in a dry location and the power output for the money is pretty decent. The Fusion MA amplifiers use Class-AB circuity so they will not be as efficient in terms of their power consumption as the Signature Series and the warranty on the Signature Series amplifiers is significantly better than the warranty on the MA series.

Fusion Signature Series Amplifiers

The Signature Series Fusion Marine amplifiers come in monoblock, 4 channel, 5 channel, 6 channel, and 8 channel configurations. These amplifiers deliver clean power at a pretty affordable price point given the output, but they are not designed for wet area installation. The Fusion signature series marine amplifiers are not designed to get wet. The signal prorcessing on these Signature Series amplifiers is pretty standard with 12dB/Octave crossovers with high-pass, low-pass, and all pass filters. The power output that Fusion lists is the peak power output compared to the RMS power output of most other amplifiers.

Subwoofers

Unless you are a total bass head and you want absolutely crazy bass on your boat, if you want to add subwoofers you should match the speakers that you want. The speakers and amplifiers are going to be the core of your boat's stereo system. If you have Wet Sounds speakers, you should get Wet Sounds subwoofers. If you have Fusion speakers, you should get Fusion subwoofers. If you are a true bass head and you want insane bass out on your boat, the Wet Sounds REVO XXX subwoofers are SPL style competition woofers that can handle over 1000 watts RMS, and designed for a marine environment.

Wet Sounds make marine subwoofers for both free-air and enclosed applications. The Wet Sounds REVO subwoofers come in 8", 10", and 12" models and they are available in both black and white. All of the sizes and colors are offered in single 2 ohm or 4 ohm configurations.

In addition to selling individual marine subwoofers, Wet Sounds also makes loaded marine subwoofer enclosures. They have two different versions with the Stealth and the REVO-12-PSE. The Stealth-AS subwoofer enclosures are powered and have an amplifier built-in to the enclosure itself. The REVO 12-PSE does not have an amplifier built-in but it a very nice enclosure that includes foot clamps so that the enclosure can be easily removed if needed. The Stealth-AS subwoofers come in 6", 8", and 10" models and the REVO 12-PSE, as you probably guessed, come in a 12" only.

Wet Sounds Free Air Subwoofers

Wet Sounds offers free air or infinite baffle subwoofers in both the REVO and RECON series. Like the speakers, the REVO handle more power and have better or more overall output. The REVO subwoofers are available in either white or gray cones and they are also offered in both single 2 and 4-ohm voice coils. The REVO subwoofers do not come with subwoofer grilles. They must be purchases separately to match your speakers. The RECON subwoofers come with speaker grilles and are available in the white SW, silver XS, and black XS grilles to match the RECON speakers. The RECON subwoofers can handle less power, but they are more affordable. With the Wet Sounds free air subwoofers, you get what you pay for.

Wet Sounds Subwoofers for Enclosures

In addition to the REVO and RECON free-air subwoofers, Wet Sounds also makes the REVO XXX subwoofers. These are massive SPL subwoofers that are designed for bass heads that want serious output that will withstand the elements. Bass is tough in a boat because you don't get the cabin boost that you get in a car. However, if you really want bass on your boat, the REVO XXX subwoofers are the way to go. The REVO XXX comes in both 12" and 15" sizes. The 12" REVO XXX handles 1200 Watts RMS and the 15" handles an absurd 2000 watts RMS.

Wet Sounds Marine Loaded Enclosures

Wet Sounds offers two different styles of marine-grade, loaded enclosures. The Stealth-AS subwoofers have a built-in amplifier and come in a 6", 8" and 10" model. These subwoofers were originally designed for the powersports market but also work well in boats. The other loaded enclosure Wet Sounds makes is the REVO 12 PSE which features a 12" REVO subwoofer and a passive radiator. The REVO 12 PSE comes with your choice of subwoofer grilles (1 for the subwoofer, 1 for the passive radiator) and gives you the bass you expect from a subwoofer without having to cut a hole in the hull. The REVO 12 PSE has quick-release mounts so that you can clamp it down, and then take it out if you want. The passive radiator is essentially a subwoofer without any driver powering it. It gives you the performance of a ported enclosure without the port and without the port noise. Everything is sealed and waterproof with the REVO 12 PSE and it is a quick, minimally invasive, "Give me some bass" solution for your boat.

Fusion Signature Series Subwoofers

The Fusion Signature series marine subwoofers come in a 10" size, handle 250 watts of RMS power, and have single 4 ohm voice coils. Like most marine subwoofers, the Signature series subwoofers are designed for free-air applications. The grilles match the Fusion speakers.

Fusion XS Series Subwoofers

The Fusion XS series subwoofers are are more affordable option than the Fusion Signature series subwoofers but they handle half the amount of RMS power. The Fusion XS series subwoofers come in a 10" diameter and have single 4 ohm voice coil. They are designed for free air applications. To match the XS series speakers, the Fusion XS series subwoofers are available in both sport and classic grilles. Both grille styles come with both black and white grilles included and the sport grille model includes RGB LEDs.

Fusion FM Series Subwoofers

The Fusion FM series subwoofers are for those that want a sleek, low profile appearance and a subwoofer that blends in with the hull of the boat. The FM series subwoofers have similar power handling as the XS series with 120W RMS power handling and a single, 4-ohm voice coil. The FM series subwoofers are IP65 rated and are backed by a 3 year warranty. If you want to add bass to your boat but you want a stealth appearance, the Fusion FM subwoofers are the perfect choice.

Fusion MS Series Subwoofers

This might sound repetetive, but the Fusion MS series subwoofers also are offered in a 10" diameter and have a single 4 ohm voice coil. These subwoofers handle 400 watts peak and while the RMS rating is not stated, given most speakers, it would be around 200 watts RMS. This subwoofer is a perfect match for the MS-FR series speakers and comes with a classic white grille. If you have the black speakers, you may purchase the black subwoofer grille separately.

Source Units

When it comes to marine source units, Fusion really separates themsevles from not only Wet Sounds, but every other marine radio manufacturer. Fusion's line of marine head unit's is unmatched. Wet Sounds makes two head units, the WS-MC-1 and the WS-MC-2. Fusion has a huge line of marine head units including their Apollo series, the MS-RA70 products, and several other CD/DVD players that offer true marine grade protection and a variety of mounting options.

Wet Sounds has the WS-MC-2 which is a square style marine head unit with Bluetooth, AM/FM/WB, a built-in deck power, USB, AUX, and virtually everything you might want in a radio outside of the higher end features. It mounts using a standard, 3" round hole. You can use it with an optional remote. Fusion has their SRX400 and the MS-RA55. The Fusion SRX400 has 1 zone of output and a subwoofer pre-out whereas the Wet Sounds unit lets you decide whether that second output is for a full-range, second zone or for a subwoofer. The Fusion SRX400 has built-in WiFi, can connect to the Fusion MS-RA770 for Party Bus mode, and can be controlled and connected to your phone via the FusionLink app. Finally, the SRX400 comes with a built-in DSP with pre-configured profiles for Fusion amplifiers, speakers, and subwoofers. The Fusion MS-RA55 is a basic media receiver that offers true marine protection, AM/FM, built-in Bluetooth, and a built-in amplifier. Conclusion

Wet Sounds and Fusion are among the few brands that solely focus on marine audio. When it comes to speakers, their high end speakers are much different. Wet Sounds uses titanium dome tweeters and has much higher power ratings for maximum volume. Fusion's Signature Series speakers feature silk dome tweeters and are designed with a focus on fidelity, staging, and balance. When looking at the premium priced products, it will typically depend on how you are using the boat. For most applications, the Wet Sounds REVO is going to be the better choice. It will provide the volume and clarity to cut through the engine, wind, and water noise. If you have a larger boat that and it is more about luxury versus performance, the Fusion Signature is probably a better choice with the silk dome tweeter. Among the mid and lower tier speakers, the Fusion speakers are more affordable than the Wet Sounds RECON. We would give the edge to the Fusion XS and FR series speakers over the Wet Sounds RECON if you are looking for decent speakers, but you don't want to spend the money for the premium products.

When it comes to marine tower speakers, Fusion is not in the same league as Wet Sounds. Wet Sounds has a larger product line, a better product line, more mounting options, and more options to meet your budget, whatever that budget might be. Wet Sounds has options ranging from 6.5" up to the dual 10" REV 410. Wet Sounds is the leader in tower speakers.

With the marine amplifiers, Wet Sounds product offering is significantly larger thatn Fusion's. Wet Sounds offers 4 lines of marine amplifiers that are all designed for performance using efficient, Class-D circuitry. Fusion also uses Class D circuitry in ther Signature amps while their AM series amp us Class-AB circuitry. Some of the Fusion signature series amplifiers offer great value, but they do not offer the same water resistance as the Wet Sounds amplifiers. The Wet Sounds amplifiers are typically putting out more RMS power than the Fusion products, but the Fusion marine amplifiers cost less money. If you are on a budget, Fusion makes great, Class-D amps. If you want performance that can withstand the elements, Wet Sounds delivers clean power and you don't have to worry about water. They aren't really an apples to apples comparison.

With the marine subwoofers, Wet Sounds offers more products, more sizes, more options, and more performance. However, unless you are bass-head, just match your subwoofers to your speakers and move along.

When it comes to head units, Fusion has the most extensive lineup among any marine head unit manufacturer. You get all of the best features, standard and flush mounting options, and best-in-class water resistance. The marine head unit market is where Fusion shines. Where Wet Sounds is unmatched in tower speakers, Fusion is unmatched when it comes to head units.
